Get Into the Map Pack, Where the Calls Are

Three businesses show up in the map box above every local search result. Those three take the overwhelming majority of the calls. Local SEO is the work of becoming one of them in the areas you serve.

THE THREE THAT MATTER

This Box Decides Who Gets the Call

Search any service plus a city name and this appears before the normal results. Three businesses. A map. Nothing else above the fold on a phone.

Your business is not in this box.You may rank perfectly well in the regular results further down. Most people never get there.

Getting into that box is a different discipline from ranking a webpage. Google is weighing your proximity to the searcher, how relevant your business looks for that exact service, and how prominent you are — your reviews, your citations, and how complete your profile is. Those are the three things we work on.

WHAT GOOGLE WEIGHS

Proximity, Relevance, and Prominence

Google has been fairly open about how local rankings work. Three factors decide the map pack, and understanding them explains almost every frustrating thing you’ve noticed about your own visibility.

Proximity is how close your business is to the person searching. It’s the factor you control least and the one that surprises people most — you may dominate in your own neighborhood and vanish fifteen minutes down the road. This is exactly why a single page listing every city you serve doesn’t work, and why genuine, separately written pages for each service area do.

Relevance is how well your business matches what was searched. If someone types “emergency AC repair” and your profile says only “HVAC contractor” with no services listed, Google has to guess. It usually guesses in favor of the competitor who spelled it out.

Prominence is how well known and well regarded you appear — review count and recency, citation consistency, links, and how thoroughly your profile is filled in. This is the factor with the most room to move, and it’s where most of the work happens.

Local SEO isn’t separate from your website, either. Your site is what Google reads to understand your relevance, so on-page work and local visibility pull in the same direction.

THE WORK

What We Do to Get You Found Locally

Google Business Profile

Categories, every service listed, service area, hours, photos, attributes, Q&A, and regular posts. Most profiles are half empty, and half empty is how you lose to someone with fewer trucks.

Citations & Consistency

Your name, address, and phone number listed identically everywhere online. Mismatches make Google uncertain you are one business, and uncertainty costs you position.

Service Area Pages

A genuinely written page for each area you serve, covering the work you actually do there. Not one page with twenty city names pasted into it, which Google has recognized and discounted for years.

Review Strategy

A steady flow of recent reviews, and replies to all of them. Review recency matters as much as count - forty reviews from 2019 look worse than twelve from this year.

A COMMON MISTAKE

Why One Page Listing Every City Doesn’t Work

Almost every service business website has a version of this line: “Proudly serving Katy, Cypress, Spring, Sugar Land, Pearland, The Woodlands, Humble…” usually in the footer, usually in small text.

It does nothing. Listing a city name is not the same as demonstrating you serve it. When someone in Cypress searches for your service, Google is looking for a page that genuinely addresses Cypress — the work you do there, the areas you cover, how quickly you get there. A comma-separated list gives it nothing to work with.

The version that works is a real page per area, written once, properly. That takes time, which is why most businesses don’t do it and why it still works for the ones who do. We build them as part of local SEO, and you can see how we structure ours for Sugar Land, Missouri City, and Stafford.

One warning: the shortcut version of this — generating fifty near-identical pages with the city name swapped — is worse than doing nothing. Google identifies it as doorway pages and discounts the lot. If an agency offers you a hundred location pages next month, that is what they are selling you.

Local SEO Sits Inside a Bigger Picture

Map pack visibility is one part of getting found. It works alongside the rest of our Houston SEO services — the on-page work that tells Google what you do, the off-page work that builds your credibility, and the organic rankings that keep working after you stop paying for ads.

And all of it depends on the site underneath. If your website is slow, hard to use on a phone, or thin on content, local SEO has less to work with. That’s why we usually start with the website itself.

Are You in the Box in Every Area You Serve?

Most businesses appear in one or two of their service areas and nowhere else. Send us your list and we’ll check each one, then tell you what’s keeping you out of the rest.
